A Boater's Guide to the California Delta
The California Delta is one of the best boating playgrounds in the state, and Stockton sits right at its doorstep. Whether you are new to the area or just new to boating, here is a friendly guide to what makes the Delta special and how to enjoy it.
What the Delta is
The Sacramento San Joaquin Delta is a vast network of rivers, channels, and sloughs where two major rivers meet before heading toward the bay. It adds up to more than a thousand miles of waterways. For a boater that means endless places to explore, from wide open stretches to narrow, quiet backwaters.
What you can do out there
- Wakeboarding and skiing. Calm morning water on the Delta is excellent for towed sports, which is why so many wake boats call this area home.
- Fishing. The Delta is known for bass, catfish, and striper, with countless spots to drop a line.
- Cruising and exploring. You could boat the Delta for years and still find new sloughs and channels.
- Waterfront stops. Restaurants, marinas, and tie up spots are scattered throughout, perfect for a lunch run.
- Anchoring and swimming. Quiet coves are great for dropping anchor and cooling off on a hot day.
Tips for new Delta boaters
- Learn the navigation. The Delta is a maze. A chart or a navigation app keeps you from getting turned around.
- Watch the wind and current. Afternoons can get breezy and choppy, and tidal current is real out here. Mornings are usually calmest.
- Mind your speed. Respect no wake zones near docks, marinas, and other boats.
- Watch for debris. Submerged logs and floating wood are common. Keep a lookout.
- Carry safety gear. Life jackets for everyone, plus the required equipment, every trip.
The Delta is hard on boats
Here is the trade off for all that great boating. Delta water is mineral heavy, so it leaves spotting and a stubborn waterline. The Central Valley sun is relentless on gelcoat. Boats that get used hard out here need regular care to stay looking good. None of that is a reason to boat less, it is just a reason to keep up with cleaning and protection.
Enjoy the Delta, we will handle the cleanup
The fun part is the water. The not so fun part is the waterline, the spotting, and the oxidation. That is our job. We keep Stockton area boats clean, protected, and looking sharp so owners can focus on the next trip.
