Delta water and Central Valley sun are brutal on a fiberglass hull. UV chalks the gelcoat. Brackish water leaves rust streaks and waterline staining. Pollen and dust film over every surface. A real boat detail, not a quick rinse, is what brings the gloss back and protects it through the season. We do detailing the way a marine professional should: by hand where it matters, by machine where it helps, with products built for boats, never auto grade or generic.

A real detail isn't vanity, it's how you protect the gelcoat and the resale value of a boat you paid good money for.

Clean, corrected, and protected: the three jobs of a real detail

A rinse makes a boat look better for a day. A real detail does three different jobs, and only the first is cleaning. Cleaning lifts the dirt, salt film, and grime off the surface. Correcting goes deeper, machine compounding and polishing actually remove the dead, oxidized layer of gelcoat and the fine scratches and water spots etched into it, which is the step that brings back real gloss instead of just a wet look. Protecting then seals the fresh surface with marine wax or a ceramic coating so the Delta sun and water can't immediately start dulling it again. Skip correction and you have a clean but dull boat. Skip protection and the shine you paid for fades in weeks. Doing all three, in order, is what makes a boat look new and actually stay that way through the season.

The boats we detail

Every kind of boat on the Delta brings something different to a detail, and we are set up for all of it. Wake and ski boats with deep metalflake gelcoat need careful polishing to wake up the flake without burning the finish. Bass and fishing boats collect water spotting and rust streaks from hard use and need real correction, not just a coat of wax. Pontoons are mostly furniture and flooring, so the vinyl seating, loungers, and deck are the main event. Jet skis and personal watercraft clean up fast but show every scuff. And cabin cruisers add a whole interior, galley, berths, and head, on top of the exterior. We tailor the detail to how your boat is built and how hard it gets used.

Wax or ceramic coating: which protection your boat needs

Once the hull is corrected it needs sealing, and the two real choices are marine wax and a ceramic coating. Wax is the proven, affordable option, it lays down a warm gloss and protects against UV and water for a season before it needs reapplying, which pairs naturally with a twice a year detail. A ceramic coating costs more up front but bonds to the gelcoat and protects for years, sheds water and grime so the boat stays cleaner with less effort, and holds off oxidation far longer in direct Delta sun. For a boat that lives in the water or sits uncovered all summer, ceramic usually pays for itself in protection and easier upkeep. We'll tell you honestly which makes sense for how you store and use your boat, rather than pushing the coating on a boat that doesn't need it.

Interior detailing: getting the musty smell out for good

The fastest way a boat feels old is the smell. Closed up in Delta humidity, vinyl seating, carpet, storage lockers, and cabin upholstery grow mildew that a surface wipe never reaches, and the musty odor always comes back because the source was never removed. A real interior detail treats all of it together: deep cleaning and conditioning the vinyl, shampooing and extracting the carpet, clearing the lockers and cabin spaces where mildew hides, and protecting each surface so it doesn't return. On enclosed boats we get into the cabin, galley, and berths the same way. The result is an interior that is genuinely clean and fresh, not just sprayed over, and vinyl that stays supple instead of drying and cracking in the sun.

How detailing protects your boat's resale value

Detailing is not just about how the boat looks this weekend, it is about what the boat is worth when you sell it. Gelcoat that is washed, corrected, and waxed on a regular schedule keeps its color and gloss for years. Gelcoat that is left to chalk and oxidize eventually degrades past the point polishing can fix, and at that stage the only options are expensive paint or gelcoat work, or a steep discount from a buyer who sees a tired, neglected hull. A documented detailing history tells a buyer the boat was cared for, and a boat that shows well sells faster and for more. The cost of keeping a boat detailed is almost always a small fraction of the value it preserves.

Every boat is quoted on what it actually needs, its length, its condition, its extras. No per foot formula that makes a clean boat subsidize a neglected one.

What goes into a detailing quote

Because we price every boat on its actual condition, it helps to know what moves a detailing quote. Size is the starting point, a larger hull is simply more surface to clean, correct, and protect. The big swing is oxidation: a boat that just needs a wash and wax is far quicker than a badly chalked hull that needs compounding and multiple polishing stages. Interior condition matters on a complete detail, since heavy mildew and stained carpet take more work than a tidy cabin. And add ons like a ceramic coating, mold remediation, or an engine compartment cleanup are quoted on top. When you send photos, we factor all of it in and give you one firm number before any work starts, so there are no surprises when you pick the boat up.

Keeping your boat looking new between details

A detail lasts longer when you give it a little help. A quick fresh-water rinse after a day on the brackish Delta keeps salts and minerals from drying and etching into the finish. A breathable cover or slip cover blocks the worst of the UV when the boat sits. And a gentle wash with marine soap, never household cleaners that strip wax, keeps grime from building into the kind of staining that needs full correction later. None of it replaces a real detail, but it stretches the gloss and protection you already paid for and means less cutting on the gelcoat over the boat's life. Ask us and we'll leave you with the simple routine that fits your boat and your marina.

When a detail is enough, and when your boat needs more

Think of finish care in three tiers. If your gelcoat is sound and just dirty or lightly dull, a wash and wax or a full detail brings it right back, this is most boats. If it is chalked and faded but the gelcoat itself is still thick enough, compounding and polishing during a full detail can restore real gloss without any paint. But once the gelcoat has worn too thin, or it is cracked, gouged, or damaged, polishing has nothing left to cut and the right call is gelcoat repair or paint instead. The honest version of this service is telling you which tier your boat is in, and we will, during the quote, rather than selling you a detail that can't deliver what your hull actually needs.

How often should I get my boat detailed in the Delta?

Most owners do a full detail twice a year, once in spring before peak season, once in fall to protect through winter, with a wash and wax mid season. Boats slipped year round in direct sun benefit from a quarterly maintenance wash.

Will a detail get my hull back to looking new if it's badly oxidized?

In most cases yes, gelcoat oxidation is what compounding and polishing are designed to fix. We’ll honestly assess your hull during the quote. If it's beyond restoration, we'll tell you upfront and recommend a paint or gelcoat repair instead.

How long does a boat detail take?

A wash and wax is usually a few hours; a full exterior detail is most of a day; and a complete interior and exterior detail on a larger or heavily oxidized boat can run into a second day. You always get a firm timeline with your quote.

Can you detail my boat right at the slip?

Often, yes, much of our detailing happens dockside at the Delta marinas we serve. Give us your slip number and gate access and you don't need to be there. Some heavy correction or ceramic work is better done where we can control the conditions, and we'll tell you which yours needs.

Is a ceramic coating worth it over wax?

For a boat that sits in the sun or lives in the water, usually yes, it protects for years instead of a season and keeps the hull cleaner with less work. For a covered, lightly used boat, good wax on a regular schedule may be all you need.

Can you fully remove rust stains and water spots?

In most cases, yes. Rust streaks and mineral staining respond to the right marine cleaners, and water spots etched into the gelcoat come out with compounding and polishing. If a stain has gone too deep to fully lift, we'll tell you honestly before we start.
