Signs Your Boat Has Structural Fiberglass Damage

Not all boat damage is created equal. A scratch in the gelcoat is a cosmetic fix. Structural fiberglass damage is a different story, because it affects how strong and safe your boat actually is. Here are the warning signs that the problem goes deeper than the surface.

Soft or spongy spots

Walk the deck and the floor. If an area feels soft, spongy, or flexes under your weight when the rest feels solid, that is a red flag. Soft spots usually mean the core inside the fiberglass laminate has gotten wet and started to break down. This is one of the most common structural issues we see, and it does not fix itself.

Cracks that are more than skin deep

Fine spider cracks in the gelcoat are usually cosmetic. But a crack that is wide, deep, or that you can feel a fingernail catch into may run into the laminate. Cracks around high stress areas, like the transom, stringers, or mounting points, deserve special attention.

Flexing or oil canning

The hull and deck should feel rigid. If you see or feel the hull flexing, bowing, or popping in and out under load, the structure may be compromised or delaminating. A solid boat does not move like that.

Delamination

Fiberglass is built in bonded layers. When those layers separate, it is called delamination. Signs include a hollow or dull sound when you tap the area, visible bubbling, or a section that looks raised or lifted. Tapping a healthy laminate gives a sharp, solid sound. A dead, hollow thud means trouble.

Damage after an impact

If you have hit a dock, a submerged object, or another boat, look closely even if the outside seems fine. Impact can crack or crush the fiberglass inside while the gelcoat looks almost normal. Internal damage is easy to miss and important to catch.

Water where it should not be

Taking on more water than usual, or finding moisture inside compartments and the bilge with no obvious source, can mean water is getting through the laminate. Water intrusion both signals damage and causes more of it.

Why you should not wait

Structural damage spreads. A small wet area becomes a large rotten core. A minor crack grows under load. Beyond the rising repair cost, a compromised hull is a safety issue for everyone on board. The sooner it is inspected, the smaller and cheaper the fix.
