Spring Boat Detailing Checklist for Delta Season

The California Delta does not really have an off season, but spring is when most Stockton boat owners pull the cover off and get serious about the water again. Before that first big weekend, it is worth getting your boat properly cleaned up and checked over. Here is a spring detailing checklist to start the season right.

Exterior

Winter storage is hard on a finish, even under a cover. Dust, moisture, and time all leave a mark.

  • Deep wash the hull to remove storage grime, dust, and any waterline buildup left from last season.
  • Check for oxidation. If the gelcoat looks dull or chalky, this is the time to correct it before the sun makes it worse.
  • Compound and polish any faded areas to bring the shine back.
  • Apply fresh protection. A new coat of sealant or a ceramic coating now means an easier summer of upkeep.
  • Inspect the gelcoat for new cracks, chips, or spider cracks that showed up over the winter.

Interior

The inside of the boat needs just as much attention, especially after months closed up.

  • Clean and condition the vinyl. Seats dry out and crack without care. Clean them and treat them so they stay soft.
  • Check for mildew. Closed up boats trap moisture. Look in lockers, under seats, and in carpet for any musty spots and clean them out.
  • Shampoo carpet and snap out mats to clear out dust and anything that settled over the winter.
  • Wipe down all surfaces, dash, storage, and cup holders included.

Mechanical and safety

Detailing makes the boat look great, but do not skip the safety side before that first trip.

  • Check the battery and connections after months of sitting.
  • Look over the trailer: tires, lights, bearings, and straps.
  • Confirm safety gear is on board and current, life jackets, fire extinguisher, and required equipment.
  • Test the bilge pump and check for any standing water.

Why spring is the smart time

Correcting and protecting the finish in spring sets you up for the whole season. Oxidation only gets worse in summer heat, so catching it early means less aggressive work and a better looking boat all year. A fresh coat of protection now also makes every mid season wash faster and easier.
