How to Store Your Boat for Winter in the California Delta

Winters in the California Delta are mild compared to most of the country, but that does not mean your boat can just sit untouched until spring. Damp, cool months are hard on a finish, and a boat put away dirty comes out worse than it went in. Here is how to store your boat the right way so it is ready to launch when the weather turns.

Clean it before you store it

This is the step most owners skip, and it is the most important. Grime, Delta water minerals, bug residue, and fuel film left on the boat all winter slowly etch and stain the gelcoat. Months of contact is far harder to remove later. Give the boat a full detail, or at least a deep wash, before it goes away. Storing a clean boat is storing an easy spring.

Protect the finish

A fresh coat of sealant or a ceramic coating before storage gives the gelcoat a shield through the damp months. Bare, unprotected gelcoat sitting all winter is an open invitation for oxidation and staining. A protected hull comes out of storage needing a wash, not a restoration.

Handle the interior

Moisture is the enemy in storage. A closed up, damp boat grows mildew fast.

  • Clean and dry the interior completely before covering it.
  • Condition the vinyl so it does not dry out and crack in the cold.
  • Leave lockers and compartments cracked open so air can move.
  • Pull out anything that holds moisture, like wet ropes, towels, or life jackets.

Cover and store it right

A quality cover or, better yet, covered or indoor storage keeps sun, rain, and dust off the boat. If you store outside, make sure the cover does not trap water in pockets and that it is snug enough not to flap and rub the finish. Covered storage is the single best thing you can do for a boat's appearance long term.

Do not forget the mechanical side

Detailing covers looks, but winter storage also means engine and trailer care: stabilizing fuel, protecting the engine per your owner's manual, disconnecting or maintaining the battery, and checking trailer tires. If you are not sure, your mechanic can handle the winterizing while we handle the finish.

The bottom line

A boat stored clean, protected, and dry comes out of winter ready to enjoy. A boat stored dirty comes out needing real work. The little effort now saves you the big bill later.
